GUT WRENCHING HORROR

Since I made the decision to switch the focus of my writing from Sci-Fi to horror, still within the realm of speculative fiction, I find my creativity has come unbound. I have been watching horror films to learn more about the genre. Last night I watched "The Human Centipede" and "The Human Centipede 2".

I get more horror from the evening news than I did from watching these two movies. Sure, HC2 was very graphic and depicted murder, torture and rape, but the film makes fun of itself too much and even these scenes did not induce the slightest twinge of revulsion. I knew it was just a movie, special effects and actors who would enjoy a catered lunch after the scene was finished.

Real life is more horrific.

There has only been one movie that has turned my bowels to ice-water. I did not see the whole film, just one scene. A man has kidnapped a girl and is holding her captive in a shack. He cuts her throat with a knife. You can't really see anything. It was what you hear that will stay with you while your heart continues to beat. It was a rasping, gurgling sound as air is sucked through the open wound in her throat that is filling with blood. It sounded real, as if they went to a slaughterhouse and recorded the sound a cow or swine made as it was being bled-out alive.

Real horror is not seeing or reading about violence and gore, but realizing that there is a very real possibility of it happening to you or to someone you care about.

I want to be able to write stories that will make your breath shallow, your muscles tighten in apprehension and your bowels loosen to the point of shitting yourself. I want to be the creator of your personal boogey-man.

See you in your dreams.
